“Not just solo traveled but going to a concert alone, going to the movies alone…you learn more and more about yourself and that if you can’t enjoy things on your own, you’ll never enjoy them with others either. Open your eyes,do things on your own when you only need to listen and do things YOU want to do. We deserve our own time. It’s not loneliness it’s “aloneness”❤️”
I started playing handball because I wanted to participate and loved the game. I moved school because of the sport before year 6. I had to learn to go alone, travel on a bus alone to the next town from the age of 12. So my independence grew stronger.
Fast forward to ‘99…around ‘96/97 rather…when I wanted to go and spend my summer in England…my parents didn’t let me…so back then I had decided that I am going to live in England one day…I wanted to leave as soon as I finished high school at the age of 19…again my parents t didn’t let me but during that year I started looking for ways how to go to England,so started training as a nanny/child-minder.Applied to/signed up to an agency and spring/early 2000 they found a place for me… so 31.08.2000 set off on a 26 hour bus journey to England…by myself.
I love reading this - thank you for sharing! You’ve had such a determined streak from early on — the aspect too about training as a nanny to get to England says so much. It’s amazing how those quiet instincts just keep guiding us.
To think about how was I child, a teenager it opens my eyes.
I need to go back to 1990-92ish first or maybe earlier but can’t remember too much before…
I remember as younger child, that I was always told “you look grumpy! You must smile more!” I always felt “thst want me to perform like a circus animal” why do I need to smile constantly? Just let me be me…the more they pushed this on me the more I’ve closed myself down.
(Guess what!? The oldest gets the same…”you’ve got a resting bitch face. You should smile more.-we just had a conversation about this not long before- just googled it… it’s a real thing… RBF 🤭😆)
I had quite a few “I’ll do/go to this Alone” things this year…
Have you always been comfortable doing things solo, or was that something you had to grow into?
Personally it took me some time — I didn’t travel alone for the first time until my mid-20s, and now I actually prefer it at times.

Haha yes, the RBF. I’ve been told to smile more too — it’s funny, and kind of sad, how early we start performing ease instead of just being at ease.
